Title: Substitute Bus and Van Driver

Description: Transport students safely and on time. Drive regular and extra-curricular routes as assigned or required. Potential to lead to full or part time route assignment(s).
Essential Functions:
- Ensure safety of students
- See to the safe and efficient transport of students to and from school or school related events
- Follow prescribed and assigned bus routes and schedules
- Report any mechanical problems to the bus mechanic
- Keep the assigned vehicle neat and clean
- Maintain an up to date knowledge and awareness of changes in driving laws as they regard to transporting school children
- Obey all traffic laws
- Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses
- Maintain pupil control and report any violations to the proper authorities as prescribed
- Discharge students only at authorized stops
- Transport only authorized students
- Complete established pre-trip inspection of vehicle
- Report any hazardous conditions along the existing route to the transportation supervisor
- Conduct rear door emergency evacuation drills
- Prepare reports, route maps, schedules, pupil lists and accident reports as required by the State of Ohio, Ohio Department of Education, and the Teays Valley Local board of education
- Comply with all policies, administrative procedures and administrative regulations of the Board of Education and administrative staff
- Learn and follow the bus driver's manual as provided by the Board of Education
- Inspect the school bus to determine if the bus is in safe operating condition and report any defects or problems to the fleet mechanic or transportation supervisor
- Maintain proper discipline aboard the school bus at all times; report major discipline problems to the principal and/or assistant superintendent as necessary
- Keep the interior of the bus and all windows and windshields clean at all time; schedule routine exterior cleaning with fleet mechanic
- Assign permanent seats to all students; keep seat assignment lists, route maps, time schedules and information pertinent to the pickup and delivery of students on the bus at all times
- Fuel the school bus as needed following established rules
- Observe all rules, regulations and laws regarding bus transportation as established by the State of Ohio
- Schedule routine bus maintenance with the district mechanic
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Exercise responsible leadership when on out of district school trips
- Notify the transportation supervisor in case of mechanical failure or lateness
- Report all accidents and complete required reports
- Enforce applicable Teays Valley Local Schools board policies
- Attend bus driver meetings and be available in the event of emergency dismissal
- Notify the transportation supervisor in case of illness daily, or of a continued illness so as to permit time to secure a substitute driver
- Share in the responsibility for driving for a school sponsored event and/or approved field trip
- Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy
- Maintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., student medications
- Interact in a positive manner with staff, students and parents
- Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation
- Attend meetings and in-services as required
- Perform other duties as assigned by the transportation supervisor
Qualifications:
- Such alternative(s) to the above qualifications as the superintendent and/or the board of education may find appropriate
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to work effectively with others
- Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing

- Organizational and problem solving skills
- Basic first aid
- Knowledge of relevant Ohio laws and regulations
- Knowledge of traffic rules
- Ability to listen for mechanical defects, view engine compartment for defects, and distinguish color of lights
- Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions, written warnings and labels
- Knowledge of required safety inspections

- Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue
- Frequent operation of a bus or vehicle under inclement weather conditions i.e., being prepared to come to work on all scheduled work days, except calamity days
- Frequent interaction among unruly children
- Occasional evening/weekend/summer work
- Occasional requirement o life, carry, push and pull various bus supplies up to a maximum of 20 pounds, e.g., bus hood and door; oil and fluids; occasionally lift students
- Frequent requirement o climb steps on bus and to check bus fluids
- Frequent requirement to stoop, kneel and crouch during inspections
- Frequent requirement to balance when adjusting side mirrors
- Frequent extensive sitting, up to 2 hours at a time
- Frequent exposure to high levels of noise, e.g., bus motor
- Frequent repetitive hand motions, e.g., opening bus door and turning the steering wheel
