Title: Substitute Custodian
Description: The Substitute Custodian will clean and maintain a healthy school environment in the assigned building and grounds. The Substitute Custodian will also perform general custodial and maintenance duties on school buildings while following all safety requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure safety of students, taking all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Perform minor repairs including but not limited to glass replacement, electrical repairs, wood repairs, metal repairs and painting.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of all custodial equipment, materials, and supplies and make requests for materials when needed.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and neat boiler room.
- Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, waxing, or vacuuming.
- Empty and clean waste receptacles, trash pails and pencil sharpeners.
- Refill soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers and bathroom tissue in all building restrooms.
- Check boiler room nightly.
- Clean and maintain custodial equipment and materials.
- Make adjustments or minor repairs to heating, cooling, ventilating, plumbing, or electrical systems.
- Observe regulations for the proper storage and utilization of all cleaning agents, chemicals, paint, and hazardous materials and maintain MSDS sheets as required by law.
- Monitor building security and safety by performing tasks such as locking doors after hours and checking security system.
- Receive, check and place into proper storage areas all goods delivered or routed to the building, such as equipment, miscellaneous supplies, cafeteria food products and commodities.
- Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, or parking areas using snowplows, snow blowers or snow shovels or spread snow melting chemicals.
- Mow or trim lawns or shrubbery, using mowers or hand or power trimmers and clear debris from grounds.
- Clean up and properly dispose of blood and other potentially infectious bodily fluids using universal precautions to prevent contact with infectious materials.
- Conduct maintenance checks and notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
- Promote good safety practices and procedures.
- Complete the daily routine cleaning duties as assigned by the custodial supervisor or building principal.
Knowledge
- Knowledge of basic functions of heating, cooling, electrical and plumbing systems.
- Knowledge of basic safety procedures.
- Knowledge of general cleaning supplies and equipment.
Skills
- Skilled in organizing and problem-solving skills.
- Skilled in active listening by giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking the time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
Abilities
- Ability to work effectively with others.
- Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions including written warnings and labels.
- Ability to adapt, be flexible and cooperative with other team members and superiors.
- Ability to lift up to 57 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Satisfactory completion of BCI and FBI background check
Physical Demands and Workings Conditions
- Required to have dexterity of hands and fingers.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
- Required to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- Regularly required to bend at the waist, kneel, crouch, reach, climb and stretch with hands and arms.
- Required to report to work on all scheduled workdays including inclement weather and school closure days.
- Frequently required to push, pull, lift, or carry various supplies and materials up to a maximum of 57 pounds.
- Frequently required to climb ladders and stairs.
- Frequently walking in excess of 2-3 miles per day.
- Frequently using repetitive hand motion while waxing, mopping, sweeping, etc.
- Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluid and tissue.
- Occasional interaction among unruly children.
- Occasionally required to speak and hear.
